Here’s one for the Trivial Pursuit players.
Did you know that the word polite comes from the jewellery trade?
It’s only once gem stones have been cut and polished to perfection that they can be described as ‘polite’.
I found this interesting because, it puts the onus of ‘politeness’ on the transmitter, rather than the recipient.
Of course, politeness is a social lubricant, but it’s also a chance to smooth off the edges and be the best you can be.
To be polite is to demonstrate your capabilities and competencies in the best possible light.
When someone’s appraising you, you want to be sure that they see all the shine and not flaws.
To paraphrase an old saying, politeness costs nothing (but it’s worth a fortune).

- The glasses are important, since I’m almost totally blind in one eye. This means I have zero depth perception. Instead of making snap judgements, I have to think around a subject and look again to try and gain a sense of perspective. And that’s what I’m doing here - taking a different view of the trends and patterns around us to see if they’re as close as they seem, or further away than we thought. There’s not a discipline within the communications mix that I haven’t spent time in – what connects them though, is my passion for igniting advocacy and word-of-mouth.
