I remember listening to a great interview on Radio 4 a few years ago with Gretchen Franklin, who played Ethel in EastEnders.
The interviewer asked her about the ‘good old days’ in the hope that she’d indulge in a few rose coloured spectacle reminiscences.
Instead, she pointed out that the good old days weren’t that great.
For instance, all those people who fondly remember the days when you could leave the front door open, forget that they had nothing worth stealing in the first place.
And the furniture weighed half a ton, so it wasn’t going anywhere, even if you wanted it to.
There were no electrical goods to speak of, (who remembers the radiogram?) another heavyweight.
As for personal gizmos forget it
Keep in mind that, as bad as today might sometimes appear, right now will at some point become ‘the good old days’.
I’m not saying that life is getting progressively worse, just that everything looks better with a little distance.
