Mea Culpa

Did you see Barack Obama on the news recently?

After the dramatic terrorist bombing attempt on Christmas Day, everyone’s been asking how Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab managed to get the explosives on board.

To the surprise of pretty much everyone, Barack called a press conference, put his hand up and said “Sorry, it was my fault.”

Now, it’s not as if he missed his shift operating the X-ray machine at Schipol airport.

But when it comes to the intelligence failures that enabled Abdulmutallab to get on board that plane, the President knows that the buck stops with him.

He’s a smart guy.

He’d rather people invest their time and energy into strengthening procedures and learning from mistakes, rather than spending precious resources looking for someone to blame.

No harm ever comes from telling the truth.

Rather than trying to pass the buck, own up to the mistake and take responsibility for developing the solution.

It’s a much better use of your time.
