King Kenny

My old friend Kenny Harris is a great believer in tackling problems from a fresh point-of-view.
That’s what his business is all about.
He believes, as I do, that the moment you embrace a different perspective or approach, new ideas will begin to tumble out.
So in the spirit of different perspectives, let me share a little of his thinking, this is around making presentations.
Kenny’s a big TV fan (aren’t we all) and believes that we can improve our presentations by borrowing the dramatic techniques that are used to build excitement.
For example, try freshening up a graveyard slot presentation with a ‘Previously on...’ segment that recaps what the preceding speakers have discussed.
Alternatively, you could embrace the ‘cliff-hanger’ approach and split a presentation into two halves.
End the first segment with a provocative statement or open question, and you can guarantee an attentive audience when you return to the stage.

Who’s Laughing Now?

This video has been doing the rounds recently, and has unsurprisingly proved a big hit in the agency world. (Video here)
Sure it’s funny and well-observed, but I also find it a little one sided.
Of course there are businesses and individuals out there who act like this, but sketches like this tend to perpetuate an unhealthy culture of ‘us and them’.
Anyone who works in a service role will undoubtedly have moments when a client does something frustrating or nonsensical.

But in a relationship you need to focus on the good things, rather than fixating on the short-comings. Besides which, we’ll be laughing on the other side of our face when the inevitable follow-up video emerges depicting the agency world’s foibles from the clients perspective.
And believe me, there’s a world of great material out there.
